Brick Craft Ideas And Patterns - Arts and Crafts

The term “arts & crafts” generally refers to any handmade product that was individually designed and created for the purposes of artwork, decoration, and aesthetic pleasure.

While many people make their living as artisans and crafters, many others engage in arts & crafts as a hobby. Others don’t necessarily profit from their trade, but do enjoy financial benefits by giving their creations away as gifts rather than purchase store-bought products for gift exchanging. Arts & crafts often reflect a certain culture or country, and those items that are defined as being artwork or a handicraft vary greatly by country and location.

History of Arts & Crafts

Originally, arts & crafts were the creation of goods designed for trading transactions. Many times, expert artisans and crafters would hand their talents and knowledge down to an apprentice who would spend years working and learning alongside the master craftsman. These often included such trades as blacksmith, ironworkers, glass blowers, weavers, and other crafters and artisans.

However, with the boom of the industrial revolution, many of the projects and products formerly created by artists and crafters began being produced in mass numbers. In just a few years, these trades began to die, and today, those skilled individuals who specialize in these types of arts are much more rare. Arts & crafts today are largely done as hobbies or by small retailers.

What is ‘Art’ and What is ‘Craft’?

Is there a difference between arts and crafts? While the terms is used rather interchangeably, each word has a somewhat different connotation. In general, art refers to fine arts, such as paintings, sculptures, abstract works, glass creations, and similar works of art. These artists may have received formal training at art schools or art study programs, and often charge much higher amounts for their wares.

On the other hand, craft projects are often considered to be smaller in scale, and often more “grassroots” in their creation. Common crafts include baskets, needlepoint, quilts, and small items created almost solely for basic decorations. While these crafters are no less talented than artists, they rarely receive formal training in their crafts and are more likely to work on their projects as a hobby than those who create fine art.

Common Arts & Crafts

Although the potential for arts & crafts creations is almost endless, there are some basic categories into which most arts & crafts can be assembled. Common types of arts & crafts include ceramics, wood, metal, needlepoint & textiles, glass, and others. Common textiles include cross-stitch, weaving, crochet, knitting, embroidery, patchwork, quilting, macramé, and others. Metalworking, handmade jewelry, pottery, woodworking, and sculpture are other common forms of arts & crafts. Still others are based on paper and paper products, including scrapbooking, calligraphy, collage, paper mache, and origami.

Where to Find Arts & Crafts

As popular decorations and gift giving ideas, arts & crafts are generally not difficult to locate. Arts & crafts shows provide artisans with the opportunity to sell their wares, and allow buyers the opportunity to browse and shop from a variety of different types of arts & crafts. These shows can be found throughout the year in cities and regions across the country, and generally feature local, regional, and national artists and crafters.

Festivals and fairs are also good destinations to look for arts & crafts. Many vendors will rent booths at these events in order to reach a varied audience to market their creations. In addition to shows and fairs, permanent arts & crafts malls are also easy to find in most cities. Frequently, these malls will include semi-permanent booths rented out by multiple artists.

If a buyer knows the exact item he or she is seeking, the Internet can also be a good resource for locating arts & crafts. Many artisans and crafters are now posting their wares online with the ability view photos and read descriptions of their unique products. However, while online retail sales have taken off across other industries, it is less popular for arts & crafts as buyers typically like the experience of finding and seeing the one-of-a-kind products in person.

Arts & Crafts Organizations

Several national, regional, and local arts & crafts organizations exist for networking and a sense of community among artisans & crafters. Some examples of popular organizations include the Arts & Crafts Society, the American Quilter’s Society, the American Sewing Guild, the Black Crafters Guild, the Canadian Craft & Hobby Association, the Craft & Hobby Association (United States), the Home Sewing Association, the National Art Materials Trade Association, and many others. These organizations provide support services for the arts & crafts, and often sponsor touring shows and fairs across the United States. In addition to general support organizations, many specific trades have their own sponsoring organization.
